Running The Stanley Parable

Hello all,

I just did some experimenting and managed to run The Stanley Parable on a Windows computer without installing Half-Life 2. You will need to install Steam but it does work.

To install, first download version 1.4 (located here) and open the .zip file. In it you will find a folder called thestanleyparable (all one word). You must move this file into the Steam Source Mods folder usually located at C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods or C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods depending on where you installed Steam.

Note: You cannot just move the .zip file. That will not work.

Once you move thestanleyparable into sourcemods, The Stanley Parable will be in your Steam Library next time you restart Steam. The first time you run it it will need to install Source, but after that it should run smoothly.

For further info and gameplay instructions, please refer to the readme.txt file located in the 1.4 .zip file.

For you Mac users, I apologize but you will have to either buy Half-Life 2 ($9.99 through Steam) or watch the video.

Regards,
Ms Bommarito

Welcome

Welcome to Video Games and Cultural Analysis version 2.0 (ENG 3612 Fall 2012). This class will take a 'literary' approach to analyzing games rather than the more common design-centric approach (ludology) or the purely narrative-centered approach (narratology).

Our method will be similar to reader response theory; we will be using existing philosophical and cultural studies texts to evaluate current games/trends in the gaming industry. The papers you produce in this class will be of high enough quality to submitted to academic conferences.

This is the second time that I have been able to teach this class at the University of Central Florida. If you are interested in the original class, check it out here: http://vgcultureucf.blogspot.com.
